On September 12 and 13, the Department of English, as usual, heldmeetings to welcome the parents of freshmen of this year. Professor ZhuShichang, Vice President and Dean of the Department of English and Ms ShenHongbo, Associate Dean in charge of students’ work, and the home teachers forthe freshmen attended the meetings.

During the meetings, Chen Shi from Class 1302 of Applied Englishintroduced what he had experienced in the previous year, saying that it was theteachers who gave him some help and guidance whenever he met with difficultiesso that he could have a clear mind of the goals that he was striving to attain.He was much involved in social practice and forced himself to speak the targetlanguage. As a result, he got the score of 564 during the College English Test(Band 4). Xi Lingwei, the Chairman of Students’ Union described in detail whathe and his classmates had experienced during the internship in Disney Land atOrlando Disneyland Park. He was very pleased to tell the parents that among 26practitioners, 15 had already got the job offer from Shanghai Disney Resortwhen the internship was concluded.

Vice President & Dean Professor Zhu Shichang expressed the warmestwelcome to the parents of freshmen of the English Department to make theircontribution to the cultivation of students. He said that the College providesits students with competent faculty and an ideal learning environment, but willalso build up a multi-dimensional bridge through which students may take bridgeprogram to continue their study either in overseas tertiary schools or indomestic institutions of higher learning. Students may also go to overseaspartner schools to have course-based study, summer camp or cultural experience,all of which will make it possible for students to develop physically,intellectually and morally. We require that the students acquire knowledge,develop their abilities and most important of all learn how to become a usefulsocial man. During the interaction period, Professor Zhu gave detailed answerto the questions and the atmosphere was quite active and lively.

This meeting has made it possible for parents and the school to set uprelations which will be conducive to helping to lay a solid foundation for thehealthy growth of the students. (Contributed by the Department of English)
