Lu Jiaqian Winning the First Prize in National Spoken Korean Contest

On September 21, the first “Pai Chai Da Gong Cup” National Spoken KoreanContest was successfully concluded and Miss Lu Jiaqian, a student from theDepartment of Korean, Shanghai Industry & Commerce Foreign Language Collegewon the First Prize.


This contest was sponsored by the Department of Education in Higher Technical &Vocational Colleges of Foreign Language Teaching Guidance Committee and co-sponsored byPai Chai University, Republic of Korea and Press of Dalian University ofTechnology and hosted by Hebei Institute of Foreign Languages. The contest washeld to trigger learners’ interest to learn Korean and enhance their ability toapply the language and acquire the skills of professional expertise.


The Department of Korean made preparations for the event, nominating Dr.Wu Shanzi to be the supervisor and instructor for the candidates. The studentsof the Department were all very enthusiastic about it and many students took anactive part in the qualifying contest. Finally Miss Lu Jiaqian was selected tobe the representative of our College to participate in the Preliminary SpokenContest which was held at the beginning of June. Thanks to the concertedefforts by the Instructor and contestant, Miss Lu was chosen to join the finalround of the Contest, which was a great encouragement to both the teacher andthe student.  


The Spoken Korean Contest (Final Round) was held on September 20, 2014and about one hundred contestants from 24 Technical & VocationalInstitutions of Higher Learning participated in this event.


Miss Lu performed extremely well throughout the contest. She was able tostick to the topic “Making Dream Come True” and spoke fluently. When looking atthe picture of “President Xi’s Visit to Republic of Korea”, she described thegreat changes that were brought about by Mr. Xi’s visit concerning the culturesof the two countries. In the “Scene Drama”, Miss Lu acted successfully by fullytaking advantage of her understanding of the Korean culture, making it quiteauthentic from Korean perspective. The excellent performance by Miss Lu washighly praised by the Panel of Judges and she won the First Prize together withMr. Hao Zhenshi, a student from Hebei Institute of Foreign Languages. Becauseof her outstanding performance, Miss Lu was granted an opportunity to study forhalf a year at Pai Chai University, Republic of Korea, which was free ofcharge.


After friendly consultation, the Department of Education in Higher Technical& Vocational Colleges of Foreign Language Teaching Guidance Committee andPai Chai University agreed that National Spoken Korean Contest will be heldsometime in September in Hebei Institute of Foreign Languages every year so asto make it a special platform where teaching achievements can be demonstratedand international collaboration can be further cemented. The ultimate purpose ofthe Contest is to enable the Spoken Korean Contest to reach the internationalstandard. (Contributed by President’s Office)
